Boko Haram: Fierce battle as terrorists attack three military bases, scores killed

By

In a spate of 24 hours, Boko suspected Boko Haram terrorists have launched coordinated attacks on four military bases in Borno State.

The latest attacks occurred on three military bases in Rann, Gajiram and Dikwa in Borno State, leading to the killing of at least four soldiers.

It was gathered that several of the terrorists were neutralised.

While the first attack occurred on Monday at the military base in Marte, the latest attacks were in the early hours of Tuesday.

However, the insurgents lost many fighters in Dikwa and Gajiram, where the military repelled their attacks.

According to security sources, the attack on the military formation in Rann left four soldiers dead and six others injured.

“We lost four soldiers while four sustained gunshot wounds. They also set ablaze MRAP, a gun truck and a Russian-made T-72,” one of the sources said.

A resident of the town told Daily Trust that terrorists invaded the military location around 12:00 a.m. and engaged the troops for hours before they overran the base.

“The military retreated. They looted weapons including gun trucks before leaving the base.

“We saw the corpses of four soldiers and other injured soldiers. I’m not sure of their number,” he added.

He said the terrorists retreated when a fighter jet arrived at the military location.

Meanwhile, Zagazola Makama, a counter-insurgency expert focused on the Lake Chad region,  confirmed that troops of the Nigerian Army, supported by the Nigerian Air Force (NAF), repelled the attack by the suspected Boko Haram/ISWAP terrorists on the Forward Operating Base (FOB) in Rann.

Makama said in a post on his X handle on Wednesday that the terrorists, disguised as Fulani herdsmen, launched a coordinated assault on the military base at about 12:15 am on Tuesday.

He said, "On sighting the air platform, the terrorists reportedly attempted to flee in different directions to avoid attack.”

However, he added that the NAF pilot tracked and engaged a group of the fleeing terrorists escaping in a Hilux truck, neutralising several of them and destroying the vehicle.

According to him, "The number of casualties on the side of the terrorists could not be independently verified, but the military confirmed that normalcy had been restored to the area following the encounter.”
