Residents of Benue State, Wednesday morning, took to the streets over the reported killing of Emmanuella Ahenjir, a 23-year-old final-year student of the Federal University, Wukari, by police personnel.
The protesters gathered at Makurdi, the Benue State capital, demanding action from authorities.
Emmanuella was allegedly shot dead last Friday morning by unidentified police officers at the Wurukum roundabout while riding in a vehicle coming from the Gyado Villa area of the town.
The police had then claimed they were shot at first from the vehicle.
The incident, which has sparked widespread outrage, has drawn protesters, mostly youths to the streets, led by prominent gender rights activist, Ukan Kurugh.
The demonstrators gathered in large numbers at the Wurukum roundabout, wielding placards with inscriptions such as “End Police Brutality” and “Justice for Emmanuella.”
