Hon. Nanloong Daniel (APC), representing Mikang Constituency in the Plateau State House of Assembly has been elected the new speaker.
This came after the resignation of RT. Hon. Gabriel Dewan (YPP).
There has been political tension in the state over the seat of the House Speaker, with APC lawmakers, who are in the majority, demanding for the position.
Tension finally calmed down on Wednesday, with the election of Daniel, during a session at the temporary Assembly Complex located at the Old Government House, Jos.
Daniel, a former Majority Leader in the 9th Assembly, was unanimously chosen by his colleagues to lead the Member legislature.
Earlier, there was a closed-door meeting involving Governor Caleb Mutfwang, the former Speaker Gabriel Dewan, and other lawmakers.
The emergency session was presided over by Deputy Speaker Hon. Gwotta Ajang, who facilitated the transition process.
Dewan, a member of the Young Progressives Party (YPP), is the only legislator from his party in the Assembly.
Sources say the resignation of Dewan is seen as part of a broader effort to stabilise the political climate in the State.
It could be recalled that a judgement of the Appeal Court sacked 16 PDP lawmakers in the House over their mode of nomination.
