Gunmen suspected to be herdsmen have ambushed a team of security operatives in Ancha village, near the Agan Toll Gate in the Agan Council Ward of Makurdi Local Government Area, Benue State.
The security personnel were responding to distress calls from locals, NATIONAL POST learnt.
A local hinted that residents had alerted security operatives when they noticed a group of herders grazing cattle on cultivated farmland behind the village.
The security personnel headed straight to the location, but unknown to them some of the armed herders laid ambush.
They reportedly came under under sudden and heavy gunfire from the armed herders, sparking a fierce shootout.
The situation caused panic among villagers, many of whom fled into nearby bushes for safety.
Casualty figures remain unknown as of the time of filing this report.
