Parklane Teaching Hospital under fire after gunshot victim dies over alleged negligence

By

Enugu State University Teaching Hospital, Parklane, Enugu, is facing backlash on social media after a gunshot victim, identified as Dubby died in the facility.

NATIONAL POST reports that two days ago, one Nwachukwu Okpalaoka had posted how Ndubuisi Udutchay, 32 years, was shot in Enugu on the night of July 3.

He said Ndubuisi, popularly known as Dubby, had travelled back to Enugu from Abuja to bring his vehicle for “easier movement but met with violence that shattered many hearts.”

He was said to have been shot at Independence Layout area of the Coal City State and was rushed to the Parklane Teaching Hospital where he succumbed to the injuries.

However, earlier Wednesday morning, a popular social media influencer, Chijinkem Ugwuanyi posted an update on how Dubby died.

He blamed his demise on lack of basic facilities at the Parklane Teaching Hospital.

The post reads:

“How Dubby Who Was Shöt In Enugu Died...

“The state failed him both at security level and basic medical care.

“He was shót on July 3rd, and was brought to the Parklane Hospital immediately the incident happened around 12am -1am mid night.

“Money wasn't the problem, there wasn't any delay from patient relatives or any financial constraint.

“The problem was Parklane Hospital.

“A whole state teaching hospital at the heart of the town doesn't have a functional X-ray machine (as common as that)

“The intestines were outside, almost entering shock due to internal bleeding.

“Before they would go up and down going outside for abdominal X-ray and other things the whole delay, he entered theatre almost around 8am in the morning.

“Someone who was brought in around 12-1am  and was operated around 8am in the morning.

“Someone that was having internal bleeding bleeding into the lung (hemothorax)

“Unfortunately he didn't make it after the surgery he died in the ICU.

“Let's not even talk about CT- SCAN in Parklane Hospital Enugu, I heard that one is not functional for over 1 year till this moment.

“My last line......

“If you have money in such emergency cases you should go to  any good private hospital.

“I am certain Dubby would still be here with us if he received prompt adequate care.

“Rest On Dubby.”

NATIONAL POST reports that the post has been generating diverse reactions from netizens.

Here are some of the reactions:

Martin-Ede: That's the narrative in almost the federal and State hospitals. The CMD's is hospital and other arrowheads has made hospital a place of skull. Government will be putting effort, while the hospital administrators wil be undermining it.

Victor: It's a pity, the state failure is killing more than the criminals, so sad

Obum Blessed: Shot 1am,operated 8am,a whole government hospital. May Nigeria not happen to anyone,May his soul rest in peace

Ogechi Eyah: Ah may Nigeria not happen to us oh Ka

Ndu Amos: Even if they have gone to a private hospital, chances are he will still be referred to a public hospital or rejected by the private hospital. Most private hospitals reject such critical cases for fear of the patient dying in their facility as it would be a bad name for the hospital.

Emmanuela: Nigeria is a failed state. Nothing works. A man that left his home cannot easily return back at the end of the day, one horrid story or the other. Each time I think of coming to Nigeria, the question that comes after that thought is how do you justify walking into a death trap?

Thank God for several chanel of communication available now. You can talk and see who you want to, not necessarily need to be there.

I love Nigeria, but until they are ready to fix this security issue and lack of adequate amenities to deal with emergencies, I will stay put.

Nigeria has happened to him and those that love him. May his soul rest in heaven.

Maduka: It's unfortunate, most doctors and qualified nurses in govt hospitals are just there to refer patients to their private clinics and hospitals, take govt hospitals serious at your own peril.

Again, must the young promising guy die because of insecurity?

Jessica: They won’t provide the basic equipment at the hospital, they will travel out for their own medical treatment RIP

Chimaobi: May his soul rest in peace... I witnessed that on January this year... They even referred us to Champion diagnostics center at Trans Ekulu Enugu, after that, they said we should go to Orthopedic again for scanning... Omo the stress was to much without treatment... But finally my guy survived it

Chibueze: They even tried, I could remember last 2 years I took an accident victim there about to die they told me they don't have bed very late at night. I have to drive to UNTH it is unfortunate a whole state hospital

Tobias: That hospital called Parklane is an absolute trash. These people made me spend hugely, but still lost the child. They will write tens of tests, and the labs are not always close to each other.

Meanwhile, a concerned citizen said the Enugu State government had been supportive to the health officials in the state, especially Parklane, with an enhanced salary.

He wondered why the officials were not reciprocating the government's gesture by rendering adequate care to patients.
