Peter Obi absent as Labour Party holds crucial NEC meeting

By

The Labour Party, LP, under the leadership of Senator Nenadi Usman, is currently holding its National Executive Committee, NEC, meeting.

It was, however, gathered that the party’s presidential candidate in the 2023 election, Mr Peter Obi is not at the meeting.

The meeting, taking place in Abuja, is expected to produce high reaching decisions that would determine the future of the party.

NATIONAL POST reports that this comes days after the factional National Chairman of the Party, Mr Julius Abure held a closed-door meeting with the Minister of the Federal Capital Territory, Nyesom Wike.

Although the FCT minister is a member of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, he has openly vowed to work for President Bola Tinubu’s re-election in 2027.

Tinubu is a member of the All Progressives Congress, APC.

The meeting between Wike and Abure has set tongues wagging, especially with the intractable crisis in the Labour Party.

Our correspondent gathered that the high-level NEC meeting has in attendance prominent party stakeholders, including the Governor of Abia State, Dr Alex Otti, his deputy, Engr. Ikechukwu Emetu, and several other key figures within the party.

Top on the agenda is the inauguration of an interim National Working Committee, NWC, to steer the party’s affairs pending the conduct of a National Convention.

In addition, the NEC is expected to set up various strategic committees, including one to oversee the party’s nationwide membership re-validation exercise, as well as a congresses committee to be tasked with organizing forthcoming party congresses at various levels.

Party insiders say the meeting signals a critical step toward repositioning the LP ahead of future political engagements, including preparations for the 2027 general elections.

The National President of the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC, Comrade Joe Ajaero, is also at the meeting.

The Chairman of the Board of Trustees, BoT, Chief Sylvester Ejiofor, sent a representative.

As of the time of filing this report, Obi, though a member of the Nenadi-led faction, has not arrived at the meeting venue.
