Residents of Zangon Kaya in Dawakin Tofa Local Government Area of Kano State have been thrown into mourning.
This is following the sudden death of four young men who got drowned within the neighbourhood.
Sources hinted that two of the young men had gone to swim in a nearby waterway but got trapped.
According to the source, “two of their friends who saw them struggling jumped inside to rescue them but got drowned too.
“One jumped inside first for the rescue mission and got drowned, before the second person also jumped in and could not make it.
“This was how four of them got drowned, throwing the entire area into sorrow.”
The Kano State Fire Service has confirmed the incident.
It said the victims drowned in a blocked waterway while two of them were attempting to rescue others who had gone swimming and got trapped.
Spokesperson for the Kano Fire Service, Alhaji Saminu Abdullahi, who confirmed the incident in a statement, identified the deceased as Bashir Sani (28), Nasirudden Tasi’u (25), Usman Ubale (26), and Yakubu Muhammed (22).
“We received an emergency call around 1:48 pm from one Rabiu Yusif, reporting that four people had fallen into a blocked waterway that had accumulated due to railway construction,” Abdullahi said.
He confirmed that two of the victims had entered the waterway to swim when they got trapped.
“Another person followed in a bid to rescue them but also got stuck.
“The fourth victim also tried to help but suffered the same fate,” he revealed.
According to him, residents managed to pull out two of the victims before rescue officials arrived, while the other two were recovered by the fire service team.
Unfortunately, four of them were later confirmed dead and their corpses were handed over to SP Abdulkadir Albasu of Dawanau Police Division.
