Four senators on the platform of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, have dumped the party.

The lawmakers have joined the All Progressives Congress, APC.

They officially announced their defection during plenary on Wednesday.

Defection letters of the senators were read by the Senate President, Godswill Akpabio during plenary.

NATIONAL POST reports that the senators are from Akwa Ibom and Osun States.

They include: Senator Etim Aniekan Bassey (Akwa Ibom North East) and Sen. Sampson Ekong Akpan (Akwa Ibom South).

Others are Senator Francis Adenigba Fadahunsi (Osun East) and Sen. Olubiyi Oluwole Fadeyi (Osun Central).

Meanwhile, during the plenary, the Senate relaxed its rules to allow the presence of some high-profile APC officials.

Those in attendance included the party’s National Secretary, Ajibola Basiru; Chairman of the APC in Osun State, Tajudeen Lawal; members of the House of Representatives, and former Minister, Chris Ngige.

They were all in the chamber to witness the wave of defections.

The PDP has been losing its National Assembly members to either the APC or the newly adopted African Democratic Congress, ADC.

The APC now has 72 seats in the 10th Senate, up from the 50 seats it held at the commencement of the current Assembly in June 2023.

On the other hand, PDP’s numbers have dropped to 26, following a series of defections.
