SDP expels El-Rufai, places 30-year ban

The Social Democratic Party, SDP, has expelled a former Kaduna State governor, Nasir El-Rufai.

NATIONAL POST reports that the expulsion was announced on Monday.

The party has also imposed a 30-year ban on the former governor.

SDP’s National Working Committee (NWC) said the action was in line with the party’s constitution, ideology, manifesto, principles, and practices, as well as in consonance with the Constitution of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and the Electoral Act pertaining to the exclusive right of a political party to determine its membership.

In a statement by its National Publicity Secretary, Araba Rufus Aiyenigba, the party alleged that El-Rufai forged his Ward registration with the tag "001."

The statement reads: “Upon thorough inquiry, it turned out that the Kaduna SDP was right that El-Rufai had not joined the SDP.

“Rather than register lawfully with the Ward Executives, El-Rufai simply forged his own documents and self-registered and arrogated to himself ‘number 001 in the SDP membership register of Unguwar Sarki Ward, Kaduna North Local Government Area,’ as if the ward had no single member prior to his purported joining. This is contrary to all existing and updated records of the SDP in Kaduna State."

Aiyenigba alleged that El-Rufai carried out "illegitimate trading" using the name of SDP.

El-Rufai is one of the proponents of the newly adopted African Democratic Congress, ADC.
