The Nigeria police have reportedly detained activist and politician, Omoyele Sowore.
NATIONAL POST learnt that the 2023 presidential candidate of the African Action Congress, AAC, is being held at the Nigeria Police Force Headquarters, Abuja.
Sowore, who is under investigation following alleged “forgery and inciting disturbance", on Wednesday honoured a summon by the Inspector General of Police, IGP Monitoring Unit.
He had appeared there with a travel bag containing soap, tooth paste and other items.
It was, however, gathered that the police obtained a court order to detain him.
Meanwhile, the Take It Back Movement in a statement on Wednesday night threatened to stage a nationwide protest over Sowore's purported detention.
The statement, which was signed by Juwon Sanyaolu, TIB’s National Coordinator described the detention as “politically motivated,” claiming that the police denied the activist access to the petition against him and the identity of the petitioner.
“Accordingly, the Nigerian people, students, workers, the public, and the entire membership are hereby put on notice for a nationwide protest against the continuous harassment of Sowore, and unlawful use of state institutions to suppress dissent,” he cautioned.
