Nsukka Catholic Diocese confirms demise of popular priest, Fr John Martin Chikani

The Catholic Diocese of Nsukka has confirmed the passing of popular priest and strict disciplinarian, Rev. Fr. Dr. John Martin Chikani.

Fr John Martins, who headed St Theresa's College Nsukka, STC, for several years, was renowned for his tough stance in instilling discipline on students.

The Diocesan Secretary to the Catholic Diocese of Nsukka, Rev. Fr. Cajetan Iyidobi, confirmed on Wednesday that the priest died on the evening of August 12, 2025.

This was contained in a message posted on the Diocese's social media platform.

It reads "It is with deep sorrow, yet a total submission to the will of the Almighty God and a firm hope in the resurrection of the dead, that I inform you of the sad news of the passing on to glory of our brother, Rev. Fr. John Martin Chikani.

"Fr. Chikani, known for his exceptional commitment to both his faith and community, will be fondly remembered not only for his deep spiritual convictions but also for his pivotal role in shaping the future of many through his service as an educator and administrator. 

"He was especially revered for his dedicated leadership at St. Theresa’s College, Nsukka, where he left an indelible mark on both students and staff alike.

"As an administrator, Fr. Chikani was known for his strong principles, which fostered an environment that prioritized discipline, academic excellence, and personal growth. His approach to leadership was rooted in a deep sense of responsibility and service, always putting the well-being and development of those entrusted to him first. His work at St. Theresa’s College saw the building of personalities—equipping students not just with knowledge, but with moral and ethical values that would guide them throughout their lives."

The diocese and the entire community extended their deepest condolences to his family, friends, and all who were touched by his life and work.
