Doctor abandons patient during surgery to make love with nurse

By

A bizarre incident has been reported in the United Kingdom, with the medical tribunal hearing how Dr Suhail Anjum, a consultant anaesthetist at Tameside Hospital in Greater Manchester, abandoned a patient under anaesthetic during surgery.

The medical doctor abandoned the patient to engage in sexual activity with a nurse in a nearby theatre.

During proceedings, it was revealed that Dr Anjum had requested a short “comfort break” midway through the operation, leaving a colleague in charge of monitoring the patient.

Instead of returning promptly, he allegedly met with a nurse, identified as Nurse C, in another room, where they were discovered in a compromising situation by another staff member, who subsequently reported the matter.

Counsel for the General Medical Council, GMC, Andrew Molloy, told the tribunal that the patient remained stable throughout the anaesthetist’s absence, and the procedure was completed without further complications.

Dr Anjum admitted to the misconduct and offered an unreserved apology.

“It was quite shameful, to say the least. I only have myself to blame. I offer my sincere apologies to everyone affected, and I want the chance to put this right,” he said.

He explained that the lapse in judgment occurred during what he described as a particularly “stressful period” in his personal life.
