Tension in Benue as irate youths burn down monarch’s home, office

By

Irate youths in Turan on Wednesday attacked and set ablaze the residence and office of the Mue Ter Ichongo, His Royal Highness Simon Baver.

NATIONAL POST recalls that the Benue State Police Command had earlier provided details on the circumstances that led to the death and injuries of students in Jato-Aka, Kwande Local Government Area.

The incident occurred during an exchange of gunfire between soldiers and suspected hoodlums.

Sources said that in retaliation for Tuesday’s deadly incident, youths stormed the monarch’s palace on Wednesday and set it ablaze.

According to eyewitness accounts, a mob stormed the two locations, destroying valuables before setting them on fire.

The attackers dispersed afterwards, leaving behind serious damage.

Security operatives were later deployed to restore order in the community. No casualties were immediately recorded from the burning of the monarch’s properties.

Authorities say investigations are ongoing into both the Jato-Aka violence and the subsequent destruction in Turan.

Meanwhile, community leaders have called for restraint and urged residents to cooperate with security agencies to prevent further escalation.
