Nigerian Newspapers: Top 10 news reports you need to know this Saturday morning

Good Morning! Here are today’s top highlights from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State will Tuesday next week defect to the All Progressives Congress, APC, alongside his commissioners, other aides, lawmakers and party stalwarts. This was confirmed on Friday by the national leadership of the APC.

2. A Federal lawmaker, Hon. Abass Adigun caused uproar earlier in the week after he claimed that Ibadan is almost the size of the entire South-East. Adigun, representing Ibadan North-East/Ibadan South-East Federal Constituency, was trying to justify the creation of Ibadan State when he made the statement, wherein he also claimed that one local government area in Ibadan was also larger than three LGs in Bayelsa State. 

3. Rights activist, Omoyele Sowore, disclosed that the Nigerian Government is still detaining the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Nnamd Kanu, because he is an Igbo man. Sowore, who also knocked Igbo leaders for not doing enough to secure Kanu’s release, spoke on Arise Television’s Prime Time programme on Thursday, ahead of his planned protest to demand Kanu’s release. 

4. A former lawmaker, Hon. Shu’ibu Kashim Dila has been convicted by a magistrate court in Jigawa State. His conviction was secured by the Jigawa State Public Complaints and Anti-Corruption Commission (JSPCACC) for offences bordering on criminal conspiracy, breach of trust, and cheating. He was sentenced  by Chief Magistrate Abdullahi Ibrahim Aliyu of Chief Magistrate Court II, Dutse, following a six-month trial.

5. Four soldiers paid the supreme price on Thursday as Boko Haram terrorists attacked a military post in Ngamdu, along the Damaturu–Maiduguri Road in Kaga Local Government Area of Borno State. Five others were also said to have been injured during the attack, a statement by the spokesperson for Operation Hadin Kai, Lt. Col. Uba Sani, disclosed, adding that the terrorists suffered heavy casualties during the encounter.

6. Former presidential candidate, Omoyele Sowore on Friday met ex-former President Goodluck Jonathan to discuss the continued detention of Nnamdi Kanu, leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB. After the visit, Sowore said Jonathan admitted the need to urgently and decisively address the issue of Kanu's continued detention.

7. Disaster was averted on Friday after an Air Peace flight from Abuja to Asaba lost one of its engines while preparing for take-off at the Nnamdi Azikiwe International Airport, Abuja. The incident occurred moments after the aircraft had accelerated on the runway when a loud bang was heard, accompanied by flashes of light. Fortunately, there was no fire outbreak.

8. Power has been restored to Kaduna State and its environs following the restoration of bulk electricity supply to the Mando-Kaduna 132-kilovolt transmission line. The Transmission Company of Nigeria confirmed this after days of outages in parts of the state, particularly Southern Kaduna. The spokesperson of TCN, Ndidi Mbah, disclosed this in a statement on Friday. 

9. A pregnant woman lost her life on Thursday, while four other passengers were severely injured in a road accident that occurred along Akarigbo Road in the Sagamu Local Government Area of Ogun State. The accident which involved an unregistered Payloader, a Toyota Camry registered as AAB-248 MK, and a commercial tricycle with number plate JGB-643 VD happened at about 9am on Thursday.

10. The Public Relations Officer of the Nigerian Community in Côte d'Ivoire, Davidson Ogbu, says about 2,000 trafficked underage girls have been repatriated from the French West African country. Ogbu made this disclosure on Friday when he appeared as a guest on Arise Television, describing the development as worrisome.
