A new Pontiff of the Catholic Church has been elected
This is as white smoke flowed from the chimney above the Sistine Chapel in Vatican City, signalling the election of a new Pope.
The new Pope will replace late Pope Francis who died last month at the age of 88.
However, the identity of the new pope was not immediately made known as the pontiff's name has yet to be announced.
Confirming the election, Vatican News wrote:
"White smoke! The 133 Cardinal electors gathered in the Vatican’s Sistine Chapel have elected the new Pope. He will appear soon at the central window of St. Peter’s Basilica."
It followed it up with, "As the world awaits the new Pope, we offer a detailed look at what happens inside the Sistine Chapel in the moments after the white smoke and what takes place prior to the announcement made by Cardinal Protodeacon Dominique Mamberti from the Loggia of Blessings of St. Peter’s Basilica, when he proclaims the name of the new Bishop of Rome.'
More to come...
