There is outrage in most parts of the country as students wrote their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) exams in darkness on Wednesday night.
The sad development came after the recent controversy over the 2025 Unified Tertiary Matriculation Examination, UTME, conducted by the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board, JAMB.
The Board later admitted it was caused by a technical glitch.
However, while on the part of WAEC, the body responsible for WASSCE, it is yet to issue any official explanation, but sources attributed it to logistics.
It was gathered that while the candidates had earlier written the essay component of their English paper, they were made to wait for several hours for the arrival of the exam officer with the objective section.
The delay stretched until about 8:00 to 9:00 pm in some centres, with exams reportedly ending as late as 11:00 pm.
According to a student “We waited for hours after writing the essay. When the exam officer finally came, we had to use our phone lights and lanterns to write the objective section. It was very stressful.”
Another student added, “The exam officer didn’t give any meaningful explanation for the delay. He just came, handed over the papers, and said nothing about why he was late.”
The situation sparked panic among parents, many of whom stormed the schools upon hearing that their children were still writing exams late into the night.
