Former presidential candidate of the Labour Party, Mr Peter Obi has described the resignation of the National Chairman of the All Progressives Congress, APC, Abullahi Ganduje as a right decision.
Ganduje announced his immediate resignation on Friday, citing health reasons.
The APC has already confirmed his exit and announced plans for a National Executive Council, NEC, meeting.
Reacting, Obi described it as an honourable step that should serve as an example to other public office holders facing health challenges.
In a post on his official X handle, Obi commended the APC chieftain’s decision to relinquish power on health grounds, stating that leadership requires both physical and mental fitness.
“Stepping aside for health reasons is an honourable choice. It shows awareness and respect for the responsibilities of leadership.
“By this exemplary action, Dr. Ganduje has thrown a challenge to other leaders who, due to health-related issues, are no longer able to deliver optimally. I sincerely hope they take a cue from him.
“The challenges confronting our nation today require leaders who are not only competent but also physically and mentally fit, leaders with the capacity and agility to respond decisively and promptly to pressing issues.
“At this critical point and difficult time, we can no longer afford leadership defined by medical tourism, long holidays, or absenteeism caused by age-related ailments. These things are taking a serious toll on our development.”
Meanwhile, there are feelers that Ganduje resigned to pave the way for the entrance of his estranged predecessor, Rabiu Kwankwaso from the New Nigerian Peoples Party, NNPP, to the APC.
It is believed that Ganduje is not ready to work with Kwankwaso and the current Kano governor, Abba Yusuf.
