Apex Igbo socio-cultural organisation, Ohanaeze Ndigbo Worldwide has asked the Nigerian Government to free the detained leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu.
Kanu has been in detention for four years now after he was arrested in Kenya and renditioned to Nigeria.
However, a Kenyan court in a landmark judgement earlier in the week declared his arrest and repatriation as illegal.
It also awarded monetary damages in Kanu’s favour against the government.
Reacting, the National Publicity Secretary of Ohanaeze, Ezechi Chukwu, said there was no longer any justifiable grounds to keep holding Kanu in detention.
In a statement he made available to journalists on Friday, Chukwu pleaded with President Bola Tinubu to use his constitutional powers and diplomatic instruments to free Kanu in the spirit of equity, fairness and inclusive justice.
He said, “The question of Nnamdi Kanu’s continued detention poses a moral burden on the corporate integrity of the Nigerian judicial system.
“Since his process of extradition from Kenya is unlawful and the basis for his arraignment questionable, one wonders the rational for detaining Kanu for four years without justice.”
