Expired rice, maize flooding Nigeria - Ex-SGF, Lawal raises alarm

By

A former Secretary to the Government of the Federation, SGF, Babachir David Lawal has raised the alarm over the alleged flooding of Nigeria with expired rice and maize.

He claimed that the government of President Bola Tinubu was deliberately allowing the importation of expired rice and maize into the country.

The former SGF, who made the remark on Sunday during an interview on Trust TV, is now a member of the African Democratic Congress, ADC.

He insisted that the present administration had failed to improve the lives of Nigerians.

He described himself as a large-scale farmer.

Lawal criticised the government’s handling of agriculture and food security.

For some weeks, there has been a reduction in the cost of some food items, a situation Lawal is now linking to the alleged importation of expired products.

According to him, “Last year, we could sell a bag of maize for N110,000, but fertilizer was N45,000.

“Today, fertilizer is N70,000, while maize has dropped to N65,000.

"They have imported expired maize and rice, flooding the market and destroying local farmers. Farming has become a lost venture.”

The former AGF also revealed that a coalition of northern political leaders was making moves to ensure that the All Progressives Congress, APC government is removed in 2027.

He added that Tinubu’s appointments were politically calculated to divide the electorate, noting that “the Muslims that voted for him, he has alienated them, he has embarrassed them, and underdeveloped them.”

NATIONAL POST reports that recently, Tinubu gave several appointments to the North, a move welcomed by Senator Ali Ndume.

The outspoken Senator urged the President to remember the South-East in his next line of appointments as they appear to have been sidelined.
