Assembly suspends four lawmakers over failed attempt to impeach Speaker

By

Four members of the Benue State House of Assembly have been suspended.

The lawmakers were suspended for three months over an attempt to impeach the Speaker, Aondona Dajoh.

They are members representing Makurdi North, Alfred Berger, his Kian state constituency counterpart, Terna Shimawua, Cyril Ekong of Obi state constituency, and James Umoru, representing Apa state constituency.

After the suspension, the House also readjusted its leadership to include Mr  Kennedy Angbo as the new Deputy Majority Leader, Douglas Akya emerged the position of Deputy Chief Whip, while Elias Audu got the position of the new spokesman of the House.

Meanwhile, the House Friday commenced the screening of five commissioner nominees while two of the nominees, Ogwu Odeh and Imojime Tiza would have their turn on a later date.

Their suspension comes hours after the Benue State Government disowned any attempt to impeach the speaker.

In a statement issued by the Special Assistant to the Governor on Social Media, Comr. Asortar James Asortar, the government described the claims as fake news orchestrated by opposition media to mislead the public.

He noted that contrary to the rumours, Governor Hyacinth Alia was seen late Thursday night at the Government House inspecting newly acquired vehicles meant for some members of the Assembly in the company of the Speaker.
