The Deputy National Chairman of the African Democratic Congress, ADC, Nafiu Bala, on Wednesday, announced that he has assumed office as the National Chairman of the party.
Bala made the declaration at a press conference in Abuja, signalling a looming major crisis within the opposition party.
He based his action on the provisions of both the electoral act and ADC constitution.
According to him, Ralph Nwosu, having resigned as the chairman, leaves him (Bala) next in line to take over as the party's National Chairman.
Nwosu had resigned from his position after the opposition coalition adopted ADC, a few months ago.
Upon Nwosu's resignation, David Mark was appointed as the Interim National Chairman of the party.
But, Bala who is the Deputy National Chairman had accused the coalition leaders like former Vice President Atiku Abubakar of hijacking the ADC.
Bala said: "As our party's National leadership, we are not aware of any change of leadership.
"Our party's former National chairman voluntarily resigned his position as the national Chairman of the party.
"Our party's constitution is very clear on the transfer of power or what we can do when the party's national chairman resigns.
"As far as our party is concerned, the electoral act and our party constitution says the deputy National Chairman can take over the leadership of the party.
"I now resume office as the authentic National Chairman of our great party, the African Democratic Congress, APC."
