Gunmen numbering over 20, on Thursday, launched a deadly attack at a police checkpoint located between Abia and River states boundary.
The incident, NATIONAL POST learnt, occurred at the Obehie boundary between the two states.
Two operatives of the Counter Terrorism Unit (CTU), paid the supreme price.
A police report quoted by SaharaReporters said over 20 gunmen attacked the checkpoint in the early hours of Thursday.
They were said to have arrived in three SUVs concealed behind long trucks, and opened fire on CTU operatives stationed at a sandbag checkpoint.
“The CTU Commander Base 24 Aba reported that today at about 0120hrs date, armed men suspected to be militants numbering over twenty (20) in three SUVs concealed behind long trucks with sophisticated weapons attacked his men who were in their buffer sand bags at Obehie nipping point,” it quoted the report as saying.
The assailants reportedly used sophisticated weapons during the assault.
Operatives said to have died during the attack were identified as Inspector Ishaya Audu and Inspector Anthony Emmanuel.
The report also indicated that the service rifles of the late officers were taken away, just as the attackers’ vehicles were riddled with bullets during the clash.
