Nigerian Newspapers: Top 10 highlights you need to know Wednesday morning

Good Morning! Here are today’s top highlights from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. The National Agency for Food and Drug Administration and Control, NAFDAC, has released a list of 100 products that have either been suspended or withdrawn. It gave the update in a post on its official X handle on Tuesday, detailing reasons for suspending usage of such products. Nigerians are expected to keep off such products. 

2. Slain ARISE News anchor, Somtochukwu Christelle Maduagwu, made a shocking post a few weeks before her death. In the now viral post, Sommie, as she was fondly called, wrote: “I pray from the depth of my heart that Nigeria never happens to me or anyone I care about.” Netizens are bitter that Nigeria finally happened to her. 

3. As from January 2026, ‘runs girls’, popularly known as hook-up girls, will start paying tax in Nigeria. This was disclosed by Taiwo Oyedele, Chairman of the Presidential Committee on Fiscal Policy and Tax Reforms. He explained that any income earned from rendering services is taxable and that ‘runs girls’ are no exception.

4. Tension spread in Jato Aka community, Kwande Local Government Area of Benue State on Tuesday after soldiers were accused of opening fire on people returning from the burial of Chief Hanave Laha, a traditional leader in Nzaav, Yaav Council Ward of Turan District. Local described the shooting as unprovoked, just as a student of Government Science Secondary School, Jato Aka, simply identified as Iorfa, was hit after a bullet that first struck another victim, Mr. Iorsuur, passed through and pierced his body. 

5. Chairman of the Northern Nigeria Development Company, NNDC, Alhaji Lamis Dikko, has cried out over the poverty rate in the North. He said unlike the Southern part of the country, the 19 northern states are facing severe socio-economic challenges. Dikko said poverty levels in the region stand above 60 percent, with states such as Zamfara and Sokoto recording more than 80 percent, compared to about 30 percent in the South.

6. Ahead of the 2027 presidential election, the presidency is in panic mode, the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has said. According to the Zamfara State chapter of the party, the presidency is attacking former President Goodluck Jonathan to divert attention from the failures of the Bola Tinubu administration.

7. A 22-year-old graduate, Femi Ayoade, has been jailed for life by Justice Abiola Soladoye of the Ikeja Sexual Offences and Domestic Violence Court. He was convicted for defiling a four-year-old girl inside a tricycle in the Eti-Osa area of Lagos State. Justice Soladoye condemned the convict’s conduct, describing him as a “criminally audacious man who turned a child’s vagina into a playground.”

8. A former Deputy National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bode George, has faulted claims made against ex-President Goodluck Jonathan by the presidency. He maintained that Jonathan performed better in office than the late former President Muhammadu Buhari and President Bola Tinubu, especially in the area of economy. 

9. Amid the face-off with the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association, PENGASSAN, Dangote Refinery and the Nigerian National Petroleum Limited have signed a fresh two-year crude supply deal in Naira for the plant. The NNPC’s chief corporate communications officer, Andy Odeh, confirmed the development on Tuesday. This is expected to lower tension over expected hike in petrol price. 

10. Tragedy struck in Warri, Delta State capital, after a 60-year-old American national, Jacqueline Bolling Elton, died while on a trip to see her male companion. This was disclosed by security expert, Zagazola Makama. The deceased arrived Warri on September 15, 2025, to stay with her acquaintance, 39-year-old Alawode Olaide. However, on Monday, September 29, around 3:00 p.m., she reportedly developed sudden health complications and was taken to two hospitals before she passed on.
