Nigerian Newspapers: Top 10 highlights you need to know Friday morning

Good Morning! Here are today’s top highlights from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A former Vice President, Atiku Abubakar, on Thursday, denied reports that he said he would step down for a younger presidential candidate of the African Democratic Congress, ADC. Atiku said his interview with BBC Hausa service was twisted, insisting that he statement bothers on supporting a younger candidate who wins a transparent primary election. 

2. A Federal High Court, presided over by Justice James Omotosho, on Thursday quashed a suit seeking to nullify President Bola Ahmed Tinubu’s Proclamation of State of Emergency in Rivers State. The suit was filed by Belema Briggs and four others against the emergency rule. However, in his judgment on Thursday, Justice Omotosho held that the five plaintiffs lacked the legal power to institute the case. 

3. Akwa Ibom State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, has been torn in between two orders. This is as the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party, in a statement signed by its Publicity Secretary,  Hon. Debo Ologunagba, announced the dissolution of Akwa Ibom Exco and subsequent constitution of a 31-member Caretaker Committee headed by Barrister Igwat Umoren. However, the National Secretary, Senator Samuel Anyanwu has countered the directive.

4. A 62-year-old male suspect, Bernard Odinchefu, has been arrested for levying traders and communities in Anambra State. The suspect was apprehended on October 1, 2025. Odinchefu, alleged to be a member of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, was said to be levying traders and communities to the tune of between N10,000 and N100,000. 

5. Former lawmaker, Senator Shehu Sani has said it would be very difficult for ex-Vice President, Atiku Abubakar to lose the presidential ticket of the African Democratic Congress, ADC. Sani, who represented Kaduna Central, said it would be easier for a camel to pass through the hole of a needle than for Atiku to be beaten in any primary election.

6. A Bishop in Ebonyi State has been arrested for allegedly engaging in marathon sex with a female sickle cell patient under the guise of providing a spiritual solution to her health challenges. The cleric, Bishop Ndibueze Onyagoziri Okorie is the General Overseer of Champion the Truth Cathedral. He had promised that after the marathon sex, 22-year-old victim’s genotype would change from SS to AA. 

7. Big Brother has officially disqualified housemate, Faith from the ongoing show. The housemate was sacked after a physical altercation with fellow contestant, Sultana. Our correspondent reports that the clash led to injuries. The decision was announced by Biggie after he summoned an emergency meeting at the main lounge, and was asked to leave the house immediately. 

8. Tragedy has hit the Imo State chapter of the African Democratic Congress, ADC. This is following the sudden death of the Deputy Publicity Secretary of the party in the state, Hon. Ugochimereze Chinedu Asuzu. He died after reportedly slumping in the early hours of Wednesday.

9. A middle-aged woman has set herself ablaze inside the family compound of Nigeria’s first Prime Minister, Sir Abubakar Tafawa Balewa, in Bauchi. The Bauchi State Police Command confirmed the incident, saying the woman, who was once married and had children, sustained fatal first-degree burns after pouring petrol on herself and igniting a match.

10. Governor Chukwuma Soludo of Anambra State has given conditions under which he can release detained native doctors, Chigozie Nwangwu, Akwa Okuko. He spoke when the youths of Oba community, where Akwa Okuko hails from, begged for his release. Soludo said: ""Akwa Okuko is not the only one being held. You know I don't paint word. Someone said he is your cherished son, but I will tell you that the man you are talking about derailed our youths. I'm here in Oba to tell you so. He deceived people, scammed people and we must say the truth. "It is after saying the truth and you accept it that you can now beg for forgiveness, and we will consider it.”
