FG bows to pressure, sets 16 as minimum admission age

By

After months of controversy, the Nigerian Government has officially set the minimum age for admission into the country’s tertiary institutions at 16 years.

NATIONAL POST reports that for several months, there have been issues surrounding the official admission age in Nigeria, with different age brackets being reported, leaving many admission seekers who were less than 18 years of age stranded.

However, the Minister of Education, Dr. Tunji Alausa has now confirmed that 16 years has been adopted as the country’s admission age.

He stated this while opening the ongoing Policy Meeting of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB) in Abuja.

The government also cautioned that any admission carried out outside the Central Admission Processing System (CAPS) would be deemed illegal, and those responsible would face prosecution.

Alausa cautioned that heads of institutions involved in admission malpractice would be prosecuted.

He affirmed that the government’s official minimum admission age of 16 is final and non-negotiable.
