Dangote, NUPENG: Nigerian Govt takes action to avert nationwide shutdown

By

In a last move to avert the looming shutdown of the economy, the Nigerian Government has summoned the management of Dangote group and the leadership of the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.

The summon was issued through the Minister of Labour and Employment.

NATIONAL POST reports that the feuding parties are to hold an emergency meeting on Monday, September 8.

The nationwide strike is coming in response to alleged anti-union policy by the Dangote Group.

The oil workers have already announced a commencement of a total strike from Monday, which has been endorsed by the Nigeria Labour Congress, NLC.

To show ita total support for the strike, the NLC has written to its over 54 affiliates and 36 councils to prepare to join the strike.

It described the current action as the battle for the survival of Labour movement and dignity of workers.

Meanwhile, the key issue is the alleged refusal of the Dangote Refinery to allow tanker drivers under its employ to join the Nigeria Union of Petroleum and Natural Gas Workers, NUPENG.

The group described this as an attempt by the Dangote Refinery and its management want to bring back slavery into Nigeria's workforce.

"Slavery ended centuries ago, but some unscrupulous capitalists are making efforts to bring it back. Any worker who cannot exercise the right of association is no better than a slave.

"Ordinary Nigerians should neither encourage nor support slavish working conditions," NUPENG said in a statement.
