UNN imposes curfew on campuses after Power Autos incident

By

The University of Nigeria, Nsukka (UNN), has banned holding of all social events beyond 6 pm across all its campuses.

The curfew, which is with immediate effect, comes after an indigene was murdered inside the campus for scratching a vehicle.

The decision was announced in a statement issued by the Acting Public Relations Officer, Mr. Inya Egwu, who said the directive was aimed at strengthening security and preventing similar tragedies.

Chiebonam Nweze, popularly known as Power-Autos was fatally stabbed on September 12 during a bonfire night organized by the Department of Archaeology and Heritage Studies.

According to the university, the event, initially intended as a harmless student celebration, was infiltrated by miscreants from a nearby community who sparked violence, resulting in the deadly incident.

“In light of what happened, management has directed that all social events on campus must now take place only in the daytime, under the supervision of the University Security Unit.

“No event of this nature will be allowed to continue past 6:00 p.m. on any of our campuses,” the statement read.

The university described the stabbing as “tragic and avoidable,” while assuring students, staff, and the public that it is committed to creating a safer environment for academic and social life.

NATIONAL POST recalls that the five persons involved the murder have been arrested.
