By

What could have been a national disaster was averted on Saturday as the Super Eagles of Nigeria departed South Africa for Uyo, Akwa Ibom State.

The players and officials were on board a ValueJet aircraft.

NATIONAL POST learnt that upon noticing a crack in one of the windows, the pilot made an emergency landing in Angola.

This was confirmed to SaharaReporters by a top official of the Nigeria Football Federation (NFF).

The official described the incident as “a close call that could have been worse.”

It was gathered that the pilot noticed the fault midair and diverted for an emergency landing.

The Super Eagles recorded a 2-1 win over Lesotho on Friday evening.

Eric Chelle's men will round off their qualifying series against Benin Republic next Tuesday in Uyo.

It is a must win game to keep their World Cup hope alive.
