Soldier reportedly kills wife, takes own life at Wawa Cantonment

The 22 Armoured Brigade of the Nigerian Army (NA) has confirmed a heartbreaking incident involving one of its personnel, Lance Corporal Akenleye Femi, serving with the 221 Battalion, Wawa Cantonment, Niger State. 

The soldier is suspected of having taken the life of his wife before committing suicide.

The unfortunate event reportedly occurred on 11 October 2025, leaving the entire Wawa Cantonment community in deep shock and disbelief.

According to initial findings, both the soldier and his wife were discovered lifeless in their residence located at Block 15, Room 24, Corporals and Below Quarters, Wawa Cantonment. 

Preliminary investigations indicate that Lance Corporal Femi, who was on official duty at the time, had obtained permission from his superior officer to briefly attend to personal matters before returning to his post. Sadly, his and his wife’s bodies were later found in their apartment.

The remains of the deceased have been taken into custody, and a comprehensive investigation is currently underway to determine the precise sequence of events and the motive behind this tragedy.

The Nigerian Army expressed its deepest condolences to the bereaved families, friends, and colleagues affected by this devastating loss. The Army also prays for the repose of the souls of the deceased.

The Commander, 22 Armoured Brigade, Brigadier General Ezra Barkins, reassured the general public that a thorough investigation will be conducted to uncover all facts surrounding the incident. The outcome will be communicated openly once concluded.

The Nigerian Army sought the continued understanding and support of the public as the investigation progresses. 

It further emphasized that the findings would not only be shared but also carefully reviewed to implement measures aimed at preventing similar occurrences in the future.
