Governor of Bayelsa State, Douye Diri has confirmed his defection to the All Progressives Congress, APC.
NATIONAL POST reported that Diri dumped the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Wednesday.
He won election as Bayelsa governor two times under the PDP platform.
However, he said he had dumped the party for what he called “very obvious reasons”.
Governor Diri addressed state lawmakers, commissioners and other appointees at the Government House in Bayelsa, during which he informed Nigerians that he is no longer a member of the PDP.
He said, “Today, I have formally resigned my membership of the Peoples Democratic Party for very obvious reasons; and I am not going to reign alone.
“As you can see, I’m here with Mr Speaker, Deputy Speaker and all the members of our party are going to go with me.
“There are some who are not here because they are on official assignment.”
I’m grateful to all my friends and supporters, who have stood by us and with us, together we will continue to build a strong and virile Bayelsa State and a strong and virile country by extension,” he added amid applause by those present.
