Masquerades banned in Enugu community after brutal assault on road users

Activities of masquerades have been prohibited in Iheakpu-Awka community, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area of Enugu State.

The decision was taken after the involvement of the masquerades in at least two violent attacks on road users last week. 

A statement issued from the Office of the Executive Chairman, Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, announced immediate ban of the masquerades. 

It referenced a a regrettable incident, which occurred at Ezzi, Iheakpu-Awka, within Igbo-Eze South Local Government Area, on Monday, 18th August 2025,.

“During the event, a commuter from Kogi State was assaulted by individuals disguised as Akatakpa masquerades. The victim sustained injuries and required brief hospitalization.

“Following consultations with security agencies and traditional authorities, the Local Government conducted a comprehensive review of the situation. 

“It was established that the Akatakpa masquerade activities, while deeply rooted in cultural heritage, were being exploited by some individuals as a cover for acts of violence and intimidation.”

The government said in order to safeguard the lives, rights, and well-being of both residents and visitors, the following resolutions were made:

“Immediate Suspension Effective from Tuesday, 19th August 2025, all Akatakpa masquerade activities in Iheakpu-Awka are suspended for the entire year 2025.

“Enforcement Any Akatakpa masquerade found operating in Iheakpu-Awka and surrounding areas during the suspension will be arrested and prosecuted in accordance with the law.

“Security Directive Security operatives have been mandated to ensure strict enforcement of this suspension.

“The Igbo-Eze South Local Government Council reaffirms under the leadership of Barr Ugo Ferdinand Ukwueze reaffirms its commitment to preserving and promoting cultural traditions but emphasizes that cultural practices must never serve as instruments of violence, intimidation, or human rights abuse. 

“The administration remains dedicated to protecting public peace, security, and the dignity of all persons within the LGA.”
