Enugu State Council of the Nigeria Union of Journalists has commended governor Peter Mbah for redefining governance through his audacious intentions to make Enugu a safe haven for all.
The union called on him to strengthen the relationship between the media and the state government.
The state NUJ chairman, Comrade Obinna Ogbuka, who made the commendation on Wednesday in his Independence message cum media chat, said the governor had transformed the state within two years and 5 months in office.
The chairman while condemning the killing of Arise News presenter, Somtochukwu Maduagwu, who was killed during a robbery attack in Abuja, called on the federal and sub-national governments to intensify efforts in bringing the perpetrators to book, as well as protecting the lives and property of the journalists and the entire citizens, which is their primary obligation.
Comrade Ogbuka noted that the media is watching and following the current developments in the state to ensure that all the ongoing projects, including the smart green schools, type two primary healthcare centres, international hospital, 5-star hotel, among others, meet the agreed standards and also delivered on the time according to the contract agreement.
He said the journalists in Enugu will soon commence the media tour of all the 17 local government areas as incumbent on the duties of the union, to appraise the performance of the local government chairmen.
The NUJ boss, who charged the media to propagate the good works of the governor, also urged Mbah to step up the good working relationship with the media in order to give the journalists a sense of belonging.
Ogbuka further urged the governor to come to the aid of the NUJ Enugu State council in procuring at least one official vehicle to the council, as journalists in the state do not have a single official vehicle, whereas other state councils of NUJ have more than two official vehicles.
He also tasked the journalists in Enugu on effective reportage, constructive criticism and a disruptive approach to be at par with the state government.
