Nigerian Newspapers: Top 10 highlights you need to know Saturday morning

Good Morning! Here are today’s top highlights from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. A Federal High Court sitting in Abuja, the Federal Capital Territory, FCT, on Friday ruled against the no case submission made by the leader of the Indigenous People of Biafra, IPOB, Mazi Nnamdi Kanu. Justice James Omotosho said Kanu has a case to answer and ordered him to open his defence. He also refused to grant Kanu’s request to be transferred from the DSS custody to the National Hospital, Abuja. 

2. In a swooping action, the management of Dangote Petroleum Refinery has sacked all Nigerians under its employ. This came less than 24 hours after 90 percent of the workers joined the Petroleum and Natural Gas Senior Staff Association of Nigeria, PENGASSAN.

3. A former Oyo State Governor, Oba Rashidi Ladoja has been crowned as the 44th Olubadan of Ibadanland. Ladoja ascended the throne on Friday after a crowning ceremony which took place at the Ose Meji Temple in Ibadan South-East Local Government Area. President Bola Tinubu and many other guests were at the event. 

4. The Nigerian Bar Association, NBA, is outraged over the remand of its member in prison by an Owerri Chief Magistrate, Obinna Njemanze. The lawyer, Chinedu Agu, was remanded at the Owerri Correctional Centre, after his arraignment followed charges of cyberstalking, criminal defamation and incitement over opinion articles criticising Governor Hope Uzodimma’s administration.

5. Rivers State Governor, Siminalayi Fubara has dissolved the State’s Pensions Board. The dissolution is with immediate effect. This is the first major action the governor is taking since returning to power on September 18. 

6. A dismissed soldier with the Nigerian Army, 6 Battalion, Ibagwa in Abak, Corporal Stephen Iweh has been sentenced to death by hanging. He was sentenced by an Akwa Ibom State High Court sitting in Uyo over the murder of a 42-year-old man, Christopher Enobong Jimmy. He murdered the victim after he gave him a lift in his car. He thereafter made away with the car. 

7. The newly crowned Olubadan of Ibadanland, Oba Rashidi Adewolu Ladoja, has urged President Bola Tinubu to approve the creation of Ibadan State before the 2027 general elections. He made the request during his coronation speech in Ibadan, on Friday. He said it was the wishes of the people and thanked Tinubu in advance for granting the request.

8. Nigeria’s currency, Naira, continued significant appreciation against the US dollar across official, black markets on Friday, ending the week on a good note. According to the Central Bank of Nigeria data, the Naira gained to N1,480.66 on Friday, up from N1,488.26 on Thursday. Similarly at the black market, it firmed up from N2 to N1,495 on Friday, up from the N1,497 traded on Thursday. 

9. A High Court sitting in Sokoto has ordered the West African Examinations Council, WAEC, to immediately release the withheld results of 47 students of Global Kids Academy, Sokoto. Justice Muawiya Mahmud, who issued the ruling, said the rights of the students were violated.  

10. The Obidient Movement declared that the Labour Party's presidential candidate, Peter Obi will not join the African Democratic Congress, ADC, in a hurry. It spoke through National Coordinator of the movement, Yunusa Tanko, stating that Obi will consult extensively before taking a political decision on officially joining the ADC. This was in response to the order issued by the ADC that all those yet to resign from their former parties should do so immediately.
