The All Progressives Congress, APC, has dissolved all local government and ward executives in Enugu State.
This is part of the ongoing reforms in the state chapter of the ruling party.
NATIONAL POST recalls that a few days ago, the National Working Committee, NWC, of the party, sacked the Barr Ugochukwu Agballah-led State Working Committee, SWC, of the Enugu APC.
The founding chairman of the party, Barr Ben Nwoye was then appointed to chair a 7-man caretaker committee which is presently in charge of the party.
Addressing journalists after a stakeholders’ meeting for the Enugu West Senatorial District, held in Enugu, Nwoye explained that the decision followed a directive from the NWC and was taken after extensive consultations with critical party stakeholders at both the national and state levels.
He stated that the dissolution was aimed at creating room for a more inclusive and vibrant leadership structure that would reinvigorate the party’s presence at the grassroots.
The Chairman emphasized that the APC in Enugu had, in recent years, struggled with internal divisions, factionalism, and leadership disputes that weakened its political standing. The new development, he said, would enable the party to begin afresh with a unified front ahead of future elections.
“This dissolution is not a punishment; rather, it is a strategic move to rebuild the APC in Enugu State from the ground up.
“We want a party structure that truly represents the interests of our members, one that will be inclusive, transparent, and accountable,” Nwoye said.
He added that a reconstitution process would soon commence, during which credible, dedicated, and grassroots-oriented members would be selected to fill leadership positions at both the ward and local government levels.
The caretaker chairman, however, assured that the process would be transparent and would provide equal opportunity for all members willing to serve.
Dr. Nwoye also called on party faithful to remain united and to see the restructuring as a positive step toward restoring the APC’s influence in Enugu politics.
He warned against divisive tendencies and internal sabotage, urging members to put the party’s interest above personal ambitions.
He said: “Unity is the foundation for success in any political organization. We must come together as one family if we are to make meaningful progress.
"The APC remains a strong platform for change, and with this new restructuring, we are confident that Enugu will soon become a stronghold of the party,” he noted.
Several stakeholders at the meeting applauded the caretaker committee’s decision, describing it as timely and courageous.
They emphasized that the move would help to address long-standing issues of neglect, marginalization, and poor coordination that had previously hindered the party’s growth in the state.
Others expressed optimism that the reorganization would create an opportunity for fresh leadership and new ideas capable of driving the APC to victory in subsequent elections.
The meeting concluded with a renewed commitment from party members to work together in rebuilding the APC’s structures and expanding its reach across Enugu State, particularly in preparation for the 2027 general elections.
Meanwhile, this is coming a few hours to the expected defection of Governor Peter Mbah to the APC.
