Nigerian Newspapers: Top 10 news reports you need to know this Wednesday morning

Good Morning! Here are today’s top highlights from Nigerian Newspapers:

1. Nigerian Government, on Tuesday, announced a major policy change for entrance into tertiary institutions. In the new policy, mathematics is no longer required from students in arts and humanities for admission into tertiary institutions. Federal Ministry of Education made the announcement, stating that such students will no longer be required to present a credit in mathematics in their Senior School Certificate Examination, organised by the West African Examination Council and National Examination Council, as a condition for admission.

2. National Chairman of the Peoples Democratic Party, Ambassador Umar Iliya Damagum and the National Legal Adviser, Kamaldeen Ajibade ‘fought in court’ on Tuesday over representation of the party in a suit seeking to stop the forthcoming National Convention. The case was instituted by three aggrieved members at the Federal High Court in Abuja. 

3. Enugu State Governor, Barr Peter Mbah has formally defected to the All Progressives Congress, APC. Mbah left the PDP alongside his immediate predecessor, Rt Hon. Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi, State and Federal lawmakers, among others. 

4. The Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, on Tuesday lost Senator Kaila Dahuwa Samaila, representing Bauchi North Senatorial District, to the ruling All Progressives Congress, APC. Three members of the House of Representatives from Kaduna State also dumped the PDP. The lawmakers are Aliyu Abdullahi (Ikara/Kubau federal constituency), Abdulkareem Ahmed (Kaduna south federal constituency), and Sadiq Abdullahi, who represents Sabon Gari federal constituency. They announced their defections during plenary on Tuesday. 

5. The African Democratic Congress (ADC) has kicked against the move by the National Assembly to move the 2027 general elections to November 2026. National Publicity Secretary of the ADC, Mallam Bolaji Abdullahi, in a statement on Tuesday, said it could undermine governance in the country. He was of the view that bringing the election date forward would push Nigeria into a perpetual campaign cycle, shorten the effective period for governance.

6. The Super Eagles of Nigeria have qualified for the 2026 World Cup playoffs. Nigeria defeated Benin Republic 4-0 to emerge as one of the four best runners-up from Africa. As announced by CAF, two semi-finals will be played on November 13 and then the final on November 16 in Morocco.

7. A 37-year-old ex-convict has been arrested for allegedly beating his girlfriend, Joy Jimoh, to death. The suspect, identified as Ademola Omokinwa, was nabbed by operatives of the Ondo State Police Command. He purportedly pounced on Joy when she demanded the refund of the sum of N100,000 he had earlier borrowed from her.

8. Edo State Governor, Monday Okpebholo on Tuesday warned that henceforth, commissioners in the state, who failed to wear the "Asiwaju cap", popularly known as President Bola Ahmed Tinubu's cap, will be sent out of the State's weekly Executive Council meeting. Okpebholo also said he would not forgive any of the commissioners that failed to wear the cap.

9. A chieftain of the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, Bode George, has expressed shock over the defection of Governor Peter Mbah of Enugu State to the All Progressives Congress, APC. George, who spoke on Tuesday while responding to questions in an interview on 'Politics Today', a programme on Channels Television, said he never saw it coming. 

10. The Nigerian Senate has set up a 12-member ad-hoc committee to advise the legislature on how to address growing international concerns regarding allegations of state-supported persecution of Christians in Nigeria. This came after a closed-door session during which lawmakers deliberated on recent claims by the United States Government suggesting possible acts of genocide targeting Christians in certain regions of the country.
